Postcards from Abroad: Brooke Shiver
Junior Brooke Shiver, a major in biology and member of the Muhlenberg volleyball team, is currently studying in Tokyo. Here is what she had to say about her experience so far.
What has been your favorite part about studying abroad?
My favorite part about studying abroad has been exploring Japan. It's extremely easy to travel here with the efficient train system, and I've been able to explore so much inside and outside of Tokyo. I've been to so many places and haven't even scratched the surface of what Japan has to offer. Each day is a new adventure, from trying new foods to exploring historic temples and shrines.
What made you decide to study abroad?
I've always loved to travel, and I've wanted to go to Japan since the sixth grade. Studying abroad is a unique way to immerse yourself in another culture. I felt like this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in another country for a few months.
What is something you have learned about yourself while studying abroad?
I've learned that I am capable of whatever I put my mind to. I was able to travel to the other side of the world entirely by myself. I didn't know the language and had to adjust to new cultural expectations. I also had to learn how to navigate the complex train system that's necessary to get around. Living in Japan has been an entirely new way of living and I've grown so much from this experience.
What classes are you taking?
I'm taking Japanese Culture, Practical Japanese for Study Abroad Students, Popular Fiction, and The Future of Your TV. It's been fun to take classes I normally wouldn't have the chance to take.
How have you kept up with your sport while abroad?
Although I haven't been able to play volleyball while abroad, I've definitely been able to stay active. It's pretty common to walk 10 miles a day in Tokyo. It's been a great opportunity to rest and heal some of the injuries I've struggled with in the last few years.
What has been the favorite place you have visited?
Harajuku is definitely my favorite part of Tokyo. There's so much to do. There's shopping, new food to try, animal cafes and fashion. It's the pop culture hub, and you always see something new each time you go. It's always a fun time in Harajuku! It's hard to pick a favorite outside of Tokyo. I traveled to Hokkaido, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Mt. Minobu and even went to Seoul, South Korea. Each place was amazing.
What is one thing you miss most about Muhlenberg?
I miss doing research at Muhlenberg. I do research in Dr. Sprayberry's lab, and it's always the highlight of my day. I love working with the bees and exploring new ideas in the lab. I can't wait to come home and get back to it.
