Women's Basketball Gives Rohn Milestone Win in OT
The Muhlenberg women's basketball team opened up Centennial Conference play with a 73-66 overtime win at Bryn Mawr.
The win was the 500th in the career of Mule head coach Ron Rohn. The winningest coach in College athletic history, Rohn has a 420-179 record in 23 seasons at Muhlenberg. He also compiled 57 wins in six seasons at Colgate University and 23 in three seasons at Hofstra University, where he began his coaching career in 1990.
Rohn is one of 62 active NCAA women's basketball coaches with at least 500 wins in a list topped by UConn's Geno Auriemma.
The milestone win didn't come easily for the Mules (8-1, 1-0), who were playing on the road for the second straight night.
Bryn Mawr (7-3, 0-1) led 13-4 four minutes into the game, and although the Mules came back to take an 11-point lead in the second quarter, they couldn't put away the Owls in the second half.
The game was tied at 53-all early in the fourth quarter. Muhlenberg took a 62-56 lead with 4:23 left in regulation but did not score again in the quarter, and Bryn Mawr tied it with 4 seconds left.
The overtime period belonged to the Mules, and in particular sophomore Lyndsey Costigan, who scored seven points in the first three minutes to stake Muhlenberg to a 69-64 lead.
The Mules did not allow a field goal for the final three minutes of overtime, and two free throws apiece by junior Mia Fitzgerald and freshman Veronica Dawson put the game away.
Dawson finished with a career-high 21 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Costigan also hit a career high with 20 points, adding 7 rebounds.
Junior Katie McGrath added 16 points for the Mules, whose eight-game winning streak is their longest since the 2018-19 team started out 9-0.
