Successful Debut for Women's Wrestling Team
The debut of women's wrestling as a varsity sport at Muhlenberg was a resounding success.
In the Mules' first bout ever, freshman Alessandra Rodriguez pinned her opponent, and she would go on to be one of three team members - of the six who competed - who placed at the Millersville Women's Open.
Freshman Kelsey Gelb led the placewinners by coming in third at 160. Senior Penelope Schneider was fourth at 145, and Rodriguez finished fifth at 124.
In her opening bout, Gelb led late in the second period but was pinned just before time expired. She came back, however, to pin the same opponent in the consolation final. Gelb also recorded a pin in the consolation semifinal.
Schneider (pictured above) wrestled six times, winning four of her bouts, including her first two consolation bouts on pins. In her first match, she scored a takedown with 32 seconds left for the winning points in a 7-5 decision.
Rodriguez followed up her program-opening pin by taking down her second opponent five times in two minutes for a win by technical superiority. She was defeated in her next two bouts but won the fifth-place contest against a Cedar Crest opponent, opening up a 10-2 lead before scoring a pin in the final minute.
Freshman Karla Lazaro recorded a pin in just 79 seconds in her second bout, and freshman Ellie Ward led 14-9 in the second period of her second bout before getting pinned.
