Men's Soccer Holds Off Misericordia

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored early in each half and went on to a 3-2 home win against Misericordia.

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored early in each half and went on to a 3-2 home win against Misericordia.

The game was just over three minutes old when the Mules (4-2-1) netted a goal off a long throw from sophomore Sam Roberts. Senior Kevin Adams headed it towards the net, and junior Sim Dorsey knocked it under the crossbar for his second goal of the season.

It was the first time Muhlenberg scored in the first five minutes since last October, when another long throw from Roberts led to an early goal against Ursinus. That game ended 1-0, but there were more goals coming in this contest.

The Cougars (1-5) tied the game just over a minute later, and the score remained 1-1 for most of the remainder of the half, until junior Trevor Mikuta converted a corner kick from senior Jake Mendelson with exactly 2:00 on the clock.

Muhlenberg extended its lead to 3-1 early in the second half at the exact same time that it scored the first goal of the game - 3:03 into the period. This goal was the fifth in the career of Adams (pictured above), who blasted in a shot from the top of the box that found its way past the Misericordia goalie.

Misericordia closed to within a goal with 21:14 remaining, but the Mules allowed only one shot the rest of the game.

The win came in the final tuneup for Muhlenberg before opening Centennial Conference play at home against Johns Hopkins on Friday night in a rematch of the last two CC championship games.
