Women's Basketball Wins Tournament Championship

The Muhlenberg women's basketball team closed the first quarter on a 13-0 run and went on to defeat host York, 57-42, in the championship game of the Ron Witman Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Muhlenberg women's basketball team closed the first quarter on a 13-0 run and went on to defeat host York, 57-42, in the championship game of the Ron Witman Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The tournament championship was the second in as many years for the Mules (3-1), who won one at Westfield State last season.

Junior Katie McGrath was named tournament MVP after scoring a game-high 18 points in the final. Freshman Veronica Dawson, who averaged 13.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games, earned a spot on the all-tounament team.

York (2-2) led 5-3 a little more than four minutes into the game but went more than seven minutes without scoring again. Senior Emily Unger scored the next eight points, six on a pair of threes and two on free throws, to put Muhlenberg ahead for good. A three-point play by freshman Erin Punter and two more free throws by sophomore Faith Tucker and junior Mia Fitzgerald extended the lead to 16-5.

The Spartans closed to within four, at 18-14, midway through the second quarter, but back-to-back threes by McGrath brought the margin back to double digits.

The Mules once again closed the quarter on a defensive run, holding York without a point for the final 4:53, and went into the break with a 24-14 lead.

The Spartans shot just 22.2 percent from the field in the first half and never got within single digits in the second half.

Unger finished with 11 points, while Fitzgerald added 7. Punter pulled down 13 rebounds, becoming the third different Muhlenberg player with 13 boards in a game in the last two days.
