Men's Wrestling Finishes Seventh at Petrofes
The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team finished a successful weekend by coming in fourth at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.
Four Mules placed, with graduate student Joey Lamparelli (125), sophomore Andrew Loniewski (141) and senior Paul Parise (197) all ending up in fourth place. Senior Fletcher Goodman was seventh at 184.
All four Mules who advanced to the final eight won a bout on the second day of the tournament.
Lamparelli scored a 10-0 major decision in the consolation semifinal before bowing out rather than face an Adrian wrestler for the second straight day. Loniewski pinned a Messiah opponent in the consolation semi, while Goodman recorded a major decision in the seventh-place bout for his 50th career win.
The highlight of the second day was yet another last-second comeback win for Parise (pictured above), who has developed a penchant for them. Competing against a Bridgewater State foe who is ranked fourth in Region 1, Parise fell into a 7-0 hole on a takedown and four-point near-fall in the first 35 seconds. He escaped and recorded a pair of his own takedowns before the end of the first period to close to within 9-7.
An escape early in the second period by Parise and by his opponent early in the third period left the score at 10-8. With 20 seconds left in regulation, Parise took his opponent down and rode him out the rest of the way for an 11-1o win, his second against a regionally ranked opponent at the tournament.
