Track Teams Record Triple Double

A big day for the triple jumpers highlighted the first full meet of the season for the Muhlenberg track and field teams.

A big day for the triple jumpers highlighted the first full meet of the season for the Muhlenberg track and field teams.

Not only did the Mules sweep the triple jump at the Moravian Indoor Meet, but they also had two men's athletes surpass the previous school record in the event.

Freshman Sean McNeil hit the sand at 46-8 on his fifth attempt, breaking the school record of 45-10½ that he had set on his fourth attempt. The mark entering the meet was 45-3½, set in 2010. McNeil's new standard ranks eighth on the Centennial Conference all-time performance list.

Had McNeil not broken the record, sophomore Maxwell Broadbent would have. He jumped 45-8 on his fifth attempt, improving on his previous career best by nearly two feet.

McNeil and Broadbent finished 1-2 in the men's triple jump, and junior Shanice Williams won the women's triple jump at 35-7¾, just a quarter-inch off her personal best.

Broadbent also won his heat of the 60 meters, placing ninth overall, in his first time competing in the event.

Other top performers for the men included sophomore David Seel, who won the mile with a late kick, and senior Hayden Klein (pictured above left), who crossed the line eighth in the 800. Sophomore Christopher Short came in fourth in the 200 with a personal best of 23.29, improving on his ninth-place standing on the all-time performance list.

Sophomore Marc Sebastian Montalvo and junior Matthew Hajel placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 5000 meters.

Sophomore Maya Richwine had a strong day for the women, placing fourth overall in the 60 by winning the fifth and final heat. Her time of 8.24 is tied for third on the all-time performance list. Richwine also came in sixth in the 200.

Junior Niki Matthews (pictured above right) was another double placewinner, finishing seventh in the long jump and eighth in the hurdles.

Senior Erin Jackson ran an impressive 800, winning her heat and placing fourth overall. Senior Ellen Maguire was seventh in the same event, and sophomore Maggie Holderith came in fourth in the 5K.
