Men's Basketball Plays Swarthmore Close
Less than three weeks after losing at home by 24 to Swarthmore, the Muhlenberg men's basketball team played the two-time defending Centennial Conference champions much closer, falling 65-58.
The Mules (8-11, 1-6) faced their largest deficit, 11 points, with 7:42 remaining, but scored the next nine points to cut the gap to two. Muhlenberg had one possession with a chance to tie or take the lead but missed a shot, and the Garnet (13-6, 5-2) responded with a 6-0 run to gain some breathing room.
Again Muhlenberg came back, with a three-pointer and putback by freshman Drew Buck making it a 61-58 game with less than a minute to play.
After a steal by senior Luke Gordos, the Mules missed a three that would have tied the game, and Swarthmore put the game away by making four free throws in the last 11 seconds.
Buck (pictured above), freshman Arinze Achufusi and senior Giovanni Rubino all scored 11 points for the Mules. Gordos finished with 7 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots.
