Volleyball Plays Tight Match at Swarthmore
The Muhlenberg volleyball team rebounded from a tough start to take Centennial Conference co-leader Swarthmore to four sets.
The Mules (8-11, 2-4) were never in the first set, falling 25-17, but rebounded to take the second set by the same score. The final two sets both came down to the final points, with the Garnet (14-6, 6-0) winning 25-22 and 25-23.
Muhlenberg featured a balanced attack, led by senior Rachel Jacobs and junior Christina Marcin with 12 kills apiece and senior Esmae Oehler with 11. Oehler, who also recorded a team-high 15 digs, surpassed the career milestones of 800 kills and 600 digs.
Sophomore Jenny Ryan ran the offense with 39 assists, topping 900 for her career.
The second set turned on an 8-2 run that extended an 11-8 Mule lead to 19-10. Oehler and Jacobs each had back-to-back kills in the run, and Oehler later added consecutive aces.
Muhlenberg trailed 7-3 in the pivotal third set before rallying to tie at 14-14. Swarthmore scored the next three points and held off the Mules the rest of the way.
In the fourth set, the Mules were behind 22-20 before scoring the next three points, two coming on a kill by freshman Olivia Bruno and another ace by Oehler. But after calling a timeout, Swarthmore netted the final three points to end the match.
Sophomore Natalia Agnolet (pictured above) recorded 7 kills in only 15 attempts.
