Softball Plays TCNJ Close Twice

The Muhlenberg softball team led in both games but was swept in a doubleheader at 25th-ranked TCNJ.

The Mules (12-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat, when senior Sophia Cicchetti reached on a bunt single, stole second and came around on two ground balls.

Cicchetti had three of Muhlenberg's four hits in the game, tying the school record for the second time this season with 3 stolen bases.

Senior Raya Kunes tossed her first complete game of the season but allowed two home runs that accounted for all of the Lions' scoring in a 3-1 win.

The second game featured more offense, with TCNJ (11-3) coming from behind in the final two innings to complete the sweep with an 8-6 victory.

An infield error and squeeze bunt by senior Brianna Kessler brought in two runs in the second to give the Mules a 2-1 lead, and a two-run single by sophomore Scooter Hulsen in the third made it 4-1.

Senior Gillian Zack (pictured above) knocked in another run with a double to the gap in right-center in the fifth, extending the advantage to 5-1, but the Lions answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to close to within 5-4.

Hulsen recorded her fourth RBI of the twinbill on a two-out single in the top of the sixth. TCNJ plated four runs in the bottom of the inning, after which the game was called for darkness.

Cicchetti added two more stolen bases in the nightcap and has now swiped 41 bags in her two years at Muhlenberg without getting caught.
