Softball Goes to 11 - Twice
The Muhlenberg softball team scored in all but two of 10 innings and rolled to a pair of wins on its first day in Myrtle Beach.
The Mules (3-2) breezed past Stevenson, 11-0, and St. Joseph's (L.I.), 11-2, in scoring exactly 11 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since 2012.
Muhlenberg hit up and down the lineup, with each of the top six hitters recording multiple hits against Stevenson and nine different players scoring runs vs. St. Joseph's.
Freshman Peri Kahn led the offense with 5 hits on the day, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Freshman Skyla Campisi knocked in 4 runs with 3 hits, while senior Sophia Cicchetti scored 4 runs and stole 3 bases.
Senior Samantha Winegard reached base in all five of her plate appearances, with three hits and a pair of walks.
An infield error and double steal by Cicchetti and junior Ava Calabrese gave the Mules a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the first game. Campisi (pictured above) drove in runs with a single in the third and a double in the fourth, and an RBI single by junior Kaya Mahy made it 6-0 through four.
Muhlenberg blew the game open with five runs in the sixth, which featured RBI singles by senior Gillian Zack, Winegard and Kahn, a sacrifice fly by Calabrese and a squeeze bunt by senior Brianna Kessler.
The 16-hit outburst was more than enough for junior Justine Bergara, who combined with freshman Samantha Fehrenbach on a five-hitter. The Mustangs had runners on in every inning but never advanced any past second base.
Sophomore Scooter Hulsen had a pair of hits and stole two bases in the win.
The second game was tied 1-1 before the Mules plated at least three runs in three straight innings to invoke the eight-run rule again.
Campisi hit a two-run single in the second, Calabrese doubled in a run in the third and singled home another in the fourth, and Winegard and Kahn delivered RBI singles in the fourth.
Sophomore Lauren Siesky, the first of three Muhlenberg pitchers, earned her first career win.
