Men's Soccer Falls in Penalties
Muhlenberg played nationally ranked Johns Hopkins to a 1-1 tie in the Centennial Conference championship game before falling in penalty kicks, 5-3.
Despite not getting the CC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Mules (12-3-6) still have a chance at earning an at-large berth. Bids and pairings will be announced on ncaa.com on Monday at 1:30 Eastern.
Both of the goals were scored in the second half. The game was scoreless at halftime thanks to junior back Trevor Mikuta, who saved a ball off the line in the 32nd minute.
The Blue Jays (12-3-4) finally broke the deadlock just 1:40 into the second half, and the score remained 1-0 for the bulk of the period.
Muhlenberg drew even with just 5:35 remaining in regulation after sophomore Gabe Blikshteyn drew a foul outside the penalty box near the sideline. The free kick by freshman Mack Metcalf (pictured above) was headed by both juniors Sim Dorsey and Elie Khalil before sophomore Sam Roberts tapped it past the Hopkins goalie.
The Mules very nearly took the lead with about three minutes left when a blast by senior Jake Mendelson rattled off the crossbar.
The teams combined for five shots in the two overtime periods, with Muhlenberg taking the lone shot on goal, and finished with the fifth draw in their six meetings over the last three seasons.
In the shootout, the Mules missed their first try, and the Blue Jays made all five of theirs to capture their second consecutive CC title.
