Late Surge Sinks Men's Basketball

A 14-0 run midway through the second half was the difference as the Muhlenberg men's basketball team fell at home to Gettysburg, 66-53.

A 14-0 run midway through the second half was the difference as the Muhlenberg men's basketball team fell at home to Gettysburg, 66-53.

The Mules (8-13, 1-8) put up a good fight against a Gettysburg team that has been ranked as high as eighth in Division III this season and is still receiving votes in the national poll.

The Bullets (16-5, 7-2) led by as many as seven points in a rugged first half in which both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm.

Muhlenberg trailed by five at the break but came back to take its first lead at 30-29 four minutes into the second half when sophomore Peter Stanton-Shepherd blocked a shot, collected the rebound and passed to senior Luke Gordos, who went the length of the court for a layup.

The teams seesawed back and forth for the next five minutes, with the Mules taking a 39-37 lead on a layup by freshman Drew Buck with 11:18 left. Muhlenberg went dry after that, however, going nearly eight minutes before making its next field goal while Gettysburg pulled away.

Senior Giovanni Rubino led the Mules with 14 points, moving up another spot to seventh on the all-time scoring list. Stanton-Shepherd (pictured above) finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, while sophomore Elias Sherman-Murphy scored 10 points in his first career start.
