Three Wrestlers Place Fourth at Regionals
Three members of the Muhlenberg wrestling reached the consolation finals at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Senior Joey Lamparelli (125), junior Frank DiEsso (133) and freshman Andrew Loniewski (141) all finished in fourth place, missing qualifying for nationals by one spot. Sophomore Ryan Fairchild won his final bout to place seventh at 184.
Lamparelli fell in the championship semifinal to the eventual regional champion before taking an 11-9 decision in his first consolation bout. Lamparelli built a 10-1 lead after two periods and then hung on after getting taken to his back in the final 30 seconds. All four of Lamparelli's losses on the season were to national qualifiers.
DiEsso started the day in the consolation bracket and needed two close wins to advance to the final. His first bout was tied 1-1 with about a minute to go before DiEsso recorded a takedown and four-point near-fall for an 8-1 decision. In the next round, he was ridden for nearly the entire second period before escaping and scoring a takedown for all the points he would need in a 4-3 win.
Loniewski also used some late magic to win two bouts, turning his opponent with 30 seconds left for the key four points in a 7-2 decision, then coming back from 7-0 down for a 9-8 decision. In the latter match, Loniewski recorded one takedown in the first period and one with 1:38 left in the third, then rode his opponent out for most of the remaining time to earn the point for riding time that was the difference in the bout.
In the consolation finals, both DiEsso (pictured above) and Loniewski lost to opponents to whom they had lost earlier in the tournament.
Fairchild needed just 61 seconds to pin his opponent in the seventh-place bout and finished as the team leader with 11 pins on the season.
