Summer Check-In: Kaylin Foss
Muhlenberg athletes are spending the summer of 2024 enjoying fantastic experiences on campus, in their hometowns, across the country and even around the world. Rising senior golf player player Kaylin Foss, a psychology major, wrote about her job helping high school students prepare for college, including teaching them golf skills!
This summer, I've had the incredible experience of working at Brown University's Pre-College program based in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown's Pre-College offers high school students from all over the world a glimpse into college life, providing them with challenging academic courses and extracurricular activities.
As a staff member, I have improved my leadership and crisis intervention skills through leading activities, overseeing student welfare and even managing my own club (the East Asian and Pacific Islander affinity group). As a psychology major, I was drawn to this role because it aligns with my interest in child development. Throughout the summer, I've had the chance to observe, analyze and record data on student interactions and development, enhancing my research skills in a real-world setting.
One of the aspects I enjoy most about this job is its flexibility. Working full-time while exploring Providence and even parts of Massachusetts has been a wonderful balance. Brown offers numerous resources for staff, including free gym classes, which I've taken full advantage of. I have thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in a new city, with its unique charm and culture.
This experience is not only enriching my current knowledge but is also preparing me for my future career. Brown hosts one of the largest college fairs, providing me with an excellent networking platform as I prepare to apply to graduate schools in the fall. The connections I've made and the insights gained from these interactions are invaluable for my career in psychology.
A fun anecdote from my summer includes leading a Topgolf excursion. As a member of the Muhlenberg women's golf team, I was able to share my skills and passion for the sport, impressing the kids and making the outing a memorable experience for everyone.
Additionally, Brown University hosted a networking event where I connected with recent graduates and investors. I was particularly inspired by a presentation on a fully automated prosthetic for below-the-knee amputees and a shoe brand for plus-size women. This event highlighted the innovative spirit of Brown's community and sparked my inspiration for a future project I am working on that will help the Muhlenberg Panhellenic community.
It's classes at Muhlenberg such as Psychology Statistics and the PPD [Personal & Professional Development] class that have been instrumental in my success this summer. These courses have equipped me with the skills to analyze data efficiently and the importance of networking. Working at an Ivy League institution like Brown has opened endless possibilities for connections and opportunities, enriching both my personal and professional life.
