Baseball Plays Two More Close Games
The Muhlenberg baseball team closed out a week of close games with two more at Washington College.
The Mules played five games in five days that were decided by a total of six runs - four one-run games and a two-run game. Three of them went into extra innings, including the first game of the Washington doubleheader, won by the Shoremen 10-9 in 12 innings. Washington scored two late runs in the nightcap to complete the sweep with a 7-5 victory.
Muhlenberg trailed 9-3 after seven innings in the opener but made a spirited comeback, plating three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Sophomore Thomas Pranzo led off the eighth with a double and came in on a ground ball. Freshman Victor Diaz brought in the second run of the frame with a single, and the third run scored on an error.
Pranzo started the ninth-inning rally too, leading off with a single for his third hit of the game. After a walk, back-to-back doubles by freshman Spencer Hobson and senior Jonathan Toth tied the game.
Toth's hit was the 100th of his career.
The Mules put only one runner on base in the three extra innings, advancing him to third in the 11th. Washington walked off on a single in the 12th.
Freshman Marc Quarrie homered for the second straight game in the sixth inning, hitting a two-run blast. Senior Ryan Riccio hit two doubles, giving him 50 hits on the season.
The second game featured another two-run homer, a blast by junior Brendan Hughes in the seventh that tied the game at 5-5. The Shoremen went back ahead with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Hughes had three hits and drove in three runs in the second game. Senior Nick Stannard (pictured above) drove in a run with a first-inning single.
