Two Champs Lead Men's Wrestling to Third Place

Behind two dramatic title-winning performances, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team placed third at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Behind two dramatic title-winning performances, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team placed third at the Centennial Conference Championships.

The third-place finish was the second straight for the Mules since 2020, and they crowned multiple champions for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Seven of the 10 Muhlenberg wrestlers competing in the tournament placed in the top three.

Graduate student Joey Lamparelli became the first Mule since 2007 to win a weight class for the third time, capturing his third straight 125-pound title. And like his first one, it came in overtime against an Ursinus opponent.

After scoring an 8-1 decision in his opening bout, Lamparelli (pictured above left) faced an Ursinus wrestler who had beaten him 6-3 just last week. Neither the first three periods nor the sudden victory period produced any takedowns, only an escape by each competitor, so the bout went to a tiebreak. Lamparelli was down first and escaped almost immediately, forcing his opponent to choose neutral for his half of the period. He could not score any points, however, and Lamparelli took the title on a 2-1 decision - his 99th career win.

Lamaprelli's dramatics were nothing compared to those of sophomore Andrew Loniewski, who took down the top two seeds in overtime to capture the 141-pound title, the first of his career.

In the semifinals, Loniewski (pictured above right) broke a 3-3 tie by taking down his Gettysburg opponent 58 seconds into overtime, and in the final, Loniewski scored a 4-1 win on a takedown 69 seconds into sudden victory. Both opponents are regionally ranked, and both defeated Loniewski during the regular season.

Earning second-place finishes were sophomore CJ Horvath (133), senior Anson Dewar (174) and senior Andrew Franklin (285). Junior Ryan Fairchild (184) and senior Paul Parise (197) both took third place.

Horvath, wrestling in his first CC Championships, led the top seed 6-1 in the first period before getting taken down and pinned. Dewar won both of his bouts to reach 80 career wins before forfeiting out of the final. Franklin pinned the regionally ranked second seed en route to his first career final.

Fairchild went 2-1 with his 29th career pin to place at the CC Championships for the second straight year, and then there was Parise, who added to his legacy of dramatic wins with a 17-16 barnburner in the consolation final. Trailing 12-3 after two periods, Parise took his Gettysburg opponent down three times in the final two minutes, adding a four-point near-fall and getting the point that proved to be the difference when his opponent was called for a technical violation in the final seconds.
