More Tough Competition for Women's Soccer

The Muhlenberg women's soccer team wrapped up a tough stretch of home games with a 4-1 loss to Swarthmore.

The Muhlenberg women's soccer team wrapped up a tough stretch of home games with a 4-1 loss to Swarthmore.

The last three visitors to Varsity Field - Rowan, Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore - all played in the NCAA Tournament last year and are all receiving votes in the national Division III poll this week.

Muhlenberg trailed the Garnet by only a single goal after freshman Devon Cheeseman netted her first career goal nine minutes into the second half. Junior Anna May sent a long through ball down the center of the field, and when the Swarthmore goalie was slow to get to the ball, Cheeseman beat her to it and finished into the open net.

The undefeated Garnet scored off a corner kick a little more than eight minutes later, though, to push its lead back to two, and added an insurance goal with four minutes left.

Sophomore Megan Stairs kept the Mules in the game, tying the career high of 16 saves she made against Johns Hopkins four days ago. She stopped 11 shots in the second half alone.
