Another Comeback Win for Women's Basketball
For the second time in three days, a big fourth quarter lifted the Muhlenberg women's basketball team to a come-from-behind Centennial Conference road win.
Two days after erasing a 15-point deficit in the final period to defeat Haverford at the buzzer, the Mules (14-5, 5-4) ended the game on a 9-0 run to overcome Swarthmore, 51-45.
The win capped a 3-0 week for Muhlenberg and avenged a 30-point home loss to the Garnet (6-13, 2-8) in January.
The Mules trailed 13-2 late in the first quarter but stayed within striking distance for the rest of the game. And strike they did after Swarthmore made a basket to extend its lead to 45-42 with 6:20 remaining. The Garnet did not score again for the rest of the game.
Sophomore Lyndsey Costigan picked up a loose ball under the basket and made a layup in traffic to make it 45-44. With 4:02 remaining, junior Katie McGrath landed a baseline jumper to give Muhlenberg the lead.
After a defensive stop, freshman Veronica Dawson drove in for a lefty hook shot - her only field goal of the game - to run the advantage to three points.
Swarthmore took three three-pointers with a chance to tie in the final three minutes but could not find the mark. Two free throws by senior Rachel Saxton and one by senior Megan Winters provided the final margin.
Muhlenberg held Swarthmore to just two fourth-quarter field goals.
Saxton scored 13 points to lead four Mules in double figures. McGrath (pictured above) and Costigan netted 13 points apiece, while senior Emily Unger finished with 10 points, including big three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to end the first quarter and start the second. The latter was the 150th three of her career.
