Men's Basketball Posts Big Win in Last Home Game

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team finished its home schedule on a high note, defeating playoff-bound Ursinus, 93-84.

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team finished its home schedule on a high note, defeating playoff-bound Ursinus, 93-84.

The Mules (10-14, 3-9) were led by the two seniors who were playing on the Memorial Hall court for the last time. Luke Gordos scored a career-high 26 points on the strength of 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range, while Giovanni Rubino went 12-for-12 from the line in finishing with 19 points.

It was a less-accomplished player, however, who provided the spark for Muhlenberg in the first half. Freshman Jack Woodard, who came in having played 15 minutes and scored seven points all season, went 3-for-3 from downtown in a four-minute span of the first half, which ended with the Mules on top 45-35.

The Bears (15-9, 8-4) came back, going on a 10-0 run in the second half to take a 58-57 lead.

The game was tied at 60, 63, 65 and 67 coming down the stretch before back-to-back three by Rubino and Gordos (pictured above) gave Muhlenberg a six-point lead. The Mules held off Ursinus the rest of the way, with the coup de grace coming in the final 40 seconds when freshman Arinze Achufusi made the second of two free throws, then stole the inbounds pass and made a layup for an 89-80 lead.

Rubino's 19 points moved him into fifth place on the Mules' all-time list with 1,575 for his career. He also became just the second Muhlenberg player in the last 50 years to record 400 points, 100 assists and 100 rebounds in a season.

Freshman Drew Buck and sophomore Elias Sherman-Murphy finished with 9 points apiece, while Achufusi added 6 steals - the most by a Mule in 11 years - to his 8 points.
