Softball Sweeps In Between Trips

In between Spring Break weekend trips to Raleigh, North Carolina, and Salisbury, Maryland, the Muhlenberg softball team took a shorter ride to Arcadia and swept a doubleheader, 7-1 and 13-1.

After ending their four games in North Carolina with a shutout, the Mules (7-3) continued to pitch well, with five pitchers combining to allow only two runs on nine hits. Sophomore Samantha Fehrenbach struck out five of the 11 batters she faced in relief to earn the win in the opener.

In the nightcap, senior Justine Bergara pitched into the fifth to earn her 24th career win, and freshman Abigail Kim closed out for her first career save.

Senior Kaitlyn Buurman led the offense by going 3-for-5 in each game, driving in a total of five runs. Her two-run double in the fourth was the big hit in the opener, a game in which Muhlenberg scratched out at least one run in each of the last five innings.

Graduate student Gillian Zack had the Mules' only other run-scoring hit in Game 1, a single in a fifth as part of a 3-for-4 game.

Muhlenberg pecked away again in the second game, opening up a 5-0 lead through four on an RBI single by Buurman, a sacrifice fly by junior Scooter Hulsen and two errors by the Knights (1-11).

In the sixth, the Mules put together their biggest inning of the year, scoring eight runs on six hits. Buurman capped the uprising with a two-run single, while junior Maddy Svenningsen and senior pinch-hitter Dani Roban (pictured above) also contributed two-run singles, and sophomore Lillie Teague cracked an RBI double.
