Summer Check-In: Spencer Hallagan
Muhlenberg athletes are spending the summer of 2024 enjoying fantastic experiences on campus, in their hometowns, across the country and even around the world. Rising senior men's lacrosse player player Spencer Hallagan, a finance major and political science minor, wrote about his internship at the world's most famous arena.
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Madison Square Garden Sports in New York City. MSG Sports owns and operates the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, Westchester Knicks, Hartford Wolf Pack and Knicks Gaming.
I interned in the Teams Finance Department, which is primarily responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of these high-profile teams, providing a dynamic and immersive learning experience. More specifically, the department works on reporting game-by-game revenue, managing team travel expenses, tracking ticket sales, handling player payroll and supporting budgeting efforts for all business and team operations.
Working with some of the largest brands in professional sports has been incredibly fulfilling, as I get to see firsthand how business strategies are implemented in such a competitive and unique industry.
This opportunity has been particularly exciting for me because it aligns perfectly with my passion for business, finance and professional sports. I have always wanted to find a career that combines these interests, and my internship at Madison Square Garden Sports has given me invaluable exposure to the intricate business side of sports, especially within a publicly traded company.
My academic experience at Muhlenberg provided a strong foundation in technical skills and business acumen, which I have been able to apply and expand upon during this internship. Overall, this experience has been instrumental in my professional growth, offering a unique perspective on the financial operations behind some of the most well-known sports franchises in the world.
