Men's Soccer Wins Playoff Opener
The Muhlenberg men's soccer team shut out McDaniel, 1-0, in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs.
The third-seeded Mules (11-3-5) advance to play at second-seeded Franklin & Marshall in a semifinal game on Friday night. This will be the third straight year that the two teams have faced each other in the CC semis, with Muhlenberg winning each of the first two. Dickinson, a 6-1 winner against Washington College in the other first-round game, will travel to top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the other semifinal.
Just as in the meeting between the two teams in the regular-season finale three days earlier, the Mules scored a goal late in the first half on a play that started with the Green Terror goalie. Freshman Thomas Shreiber blocked an attempted clearing pass just in front of the net, beat the goalie to the ball and put it in the open net for his second career goal.
Unlike the regular-season finale, in which Muhlenberg tacked on three goals in the second half, there was no further scoring. McDaniel had its best chance to tie with just over a minute remaining, but junior Ben Mulford dove to stop a free kick from just outside the box.
The shutout was the 11th of the season, and the fourth straight, for the Mules. Mulford finished with 3 saves for his 20th career shutout.
The Mules are 5-2-2 in their last three postseasons.
