Men's Soccer Topples No. 6 Dickinson
The Muhlenberg men's soccer team built a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat sixth-ranked Dickinson, 4-2.
The Red Devils (8-1-1, 0-1-1) entered the game as one of only 12 teams in Division III with no losses and one or fewer ties. They had allowed only two goals in their first nine games (none in the last four); one of their wins came at Messiah.
Although the Mules (5-2-2, 1-0-1) have won at Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference playoffs each of the last two seasons, this was their first regular-season win against a team ranked in the top 10 since 2009, when they beat 10th-ranked Dickinson at home, 1-0. They had not defeated a top-10 team on the road in the regular season in more than 25 years.
Muhlenberg opened the scoring with a bit of help just over 10 minutes into the game after a long throw from sophomore Sam Roberts was headed over the end line. The ensuing corner kick by senior Evan Schlotterbeck was tight to the goal, and when the Dickinson goalie tried to punch it away, he punched it into the net instead.
The Mules' second goal also came off a set piece early in the second half, after freshman Thomas Shreiber was taken to the ground while battling for a loose ball wide of the goal. Freshman Mack Metcalf's low service set up Roberts for a turnaround shot that was blocked in front of the net, but the ball came straight to senior Kevin Adams, who chipped it under the crossbar at close range to double Muhlenberg's lead.
A little more than a minute later, a Dickinson player received a red card, and the Mules took full advantage.
With 28:31 remaining, Schlotterbeck put in a direct kick for his second career goal to make it 3-0. And just 18 seconds later, junior Sim Dorsey sent a long pass ahead to freshman Saleem Diakite, who finished for his first career goal.
The assist was the team-leading third for Dorsey (pictured above), and the goals were the fastest for the Mules since 2010, when they scored twice in 15 seconds against Moravian.
Dickinson scored twice in the final 10 minutes to spoil the shutout bid.
