Men's Wrestling Gets Technical at Petrofes

Behind a slew of technical falls, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team enjoyed a strong first day at the Petrofes Invitational.

Behind a slew of technical falls, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team enjoyed a strong first day at the Petrofes Invitational.

The Mules advanced four wrestlers to the second day, with two alive in the championship semifinals.

Of the 18 Mules who competed, all but three won at least one bout. And of the 15 who had their hand raised, 10 recorded at least one technical fall.

Graduate student Joey Lamparelli started with a technical fall – the 18th of his career – and added a major decision and an overtime win to advance to the semifinals, where he will face the Averett wrestler, currently ranked third in Division III, who defeated him in last year's Petrofes final.

Lamparelli's quarterfinal bout was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and produced no points in the sudden victory period. He chose the down position for the first half of the tiebreaker and escaped in seven seconds, then rode his opponent out for the entire second half.

Senior Paul Parise rolled into the championship semifinals with a pair of technical falls and a pin. Parise, who entered the tournament with a career total of two technical falls, scored 17-2 and 17-1 wins in his first two bouts.

In his third bout, Parise faced a Gettysburg opponent who defeated him in the consolation final of the season-opening tournament at Alvernia. This time Parise built a 12-4 lead, scoring one takedown in each period, before finishing off his 22nd career fall with 48 seconds left.

Reaching the consolation semifinals were sophomore Andrew Loniewski (141) and senior Fletcher Goodman (184).

Like Parise, Loniewski avenged a loss to a Gettysburg opponent at Alvernia's tournament. In the consolation quarters, he recorded an 8-1 decision against a foe who handed him a 14-11 defeat last month. Loniewski also notched a technical fall and pin, with his lone loss coming to the fifth-ranked 141-pounder in Division III.

Goodman went 3-1 to improve to 12-3 on the season, only falling to the fourth-ranked 184-pounder in Region 2. He won by technical fall, 10-2 major decision and 9-2 decision to move to within one of 50 career victories.

Among Mules who didn't advance to the second day, freshman 157-pounder Charles Levine (pictured above) went 3-2 with a technical fall and two pins, including one in which he got taken down 30 seconds into the bout but recovered to flatten his opponent.

Senior Chris Sockler (2-2 with a tech fall and major decision at 165) and freshman Noah Schlofer (2-2 with a pin at 197) also came within one win of placing.

Senior Anson Dewar, competing for the first time since last year's Petrofes Invitational, pinned his second opponent for his 70th career win.
