Men's Soccer Posts Huge Road Win

In a clash between regionally ranked opponents, the Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored late in the first half for a 1-0 win at Swarthmore.

In a clash between regionally ranked opponents, the Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored late in the first half for a 1-0 win at Swarthmore.

The Mules (9-3-4, 3-1-3) entered the game ranked seventh in Region V by United Soccer Coaches, while the Garnet (9-4-2, 2-4-1) came in ranked sixth. Swarthmore was ranked as high as 13th in Division III earlier this season.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Muhlenberg is tied for fourth in the Centennial Conference with 12 points. The Mules play the team just ahead of them, Washington College (13 points and ranked fifth in the region), on the road on Saturday.

The lone goal came with 3:24 remaining in the first half after sophomore Gabe Blikshteyn was fouled while going up for a header on the Garnet side of the field. Senior Evan Schlotterbeck's free kick into the box was tapped out wide by freshman Owen Zoeller, and sophomore Sam Roberts knocked it in at the post for his second goal of the season.

Schlotterbeck and Roberts, who start at back for a defense that has recorded eight shutouts this season, are the Mules' leading scorers in CC play with 7 and 6 points, respectively.

Muhlenberg defended four corner kicks in the second half but did not allow a shot on goal and wrapped up its first win at Swarthmore since 2007.

Senior Aidan Niggeman (pictured above) made 3 saves for his fifth shutout in 10 starts.
