Football Drops Shootout at Salisbury
In the highest-scoring game in program history, the Muhlenberg football team fell at Salisbury, 59-38.
The 97 combined points eclipsed the 96 scored in a 56-40 win at Juniata in 2017. The two teams drove up and down the field to the tune of 1,180 yards and punted a total of one time.
The Mules (1-1) rolled up 532 yards of total offense and scored on their first six drives but could not slow down the Sea Gulls (2-0), who averaged 12.0 yards per play.
Leading the Muhlenberg offense was senior quarterback Joe Repetti, who passed for 378 yards - his career high for a regulation game - and rushed for 58. He contributed to four of the Mules' five touchdowns, passing for three and rushing for one. The 378 yards pushed Repetti past 6,000 passing yards for his career.
The first seven possessions of the game ended in touchdowns, with Salisbury holding a 28-21 lead with 5:53 to play in the half. Muhlenberg's three TDs came on runs by junior Amari Dunn and Repetti and a 4-yard pass from Repetti to senior Aaron Daniels.
The Mules settled for a field goal on their next possession, with sophomore Ayden Scharper booting it through from 31 yards out, but Salisbury scored another touchdown with just 10 seconds left in the half to go into the locker room ahead 35-24.
Muhlenberg rallied to take the lead in the second half. On the second play after the kickoff, Repetti hit Daniels (pictured above) with a 61-yard touchdown pass. The Mules got their first defensive stop on the next possession, with senior Matt Papa sacking the quarterback on fourth down.
Eight plays later, Repetti connected with senior Timothy Buda from 3 yards out to give Muhlenberg its first lead at 38-35.
But the Mules did not score again, and the Sea Gulls ended the game on a 24-0 run.
Buda finished with 10 catches for 96 yards, hitting double digits in receptions for the first time in his career.
