Volleyball Splits at Buttermaker
The Muhlenberg volleyball team split its two matches at the Buttermaker Tournament, defeating Vassar in four sets following an opening loss to Stevens.
Senior Esmae Oehler led the Mule offense with 21 kills in the two matches and added 22 digs, passing the career milestone of 500 digs.
Muhlenberg (3-5) won the first two matches fairly handily against Vassar, 25-18 and 25-15. The Mules led 18-5 at one point in the second set after freshman Kelly Stephen served seven straight points. Freshman Olivia Bruno recorded three kills during the run, two on putbacks of overpasses at the net.
Vassar fought back to take the third set, 25-21, and kept it close throughout the fourth. The Brewers (2-6) led 13-8 before a service run by sophomore Chloe Gaglione gave Muhlenberg the lead.
The Mules held a 21-20 edge before closing out the match by scoring four of the final six points. Junior Christina Marcin scored the first two with a pair of kills, and senior Brooke Shiver was responsible for the last two with a kill and a solo block.
Marcin finished the match with 11 kills, while Bruno, Oehler and senior Rachel Jacobs added 9 apiece. Sophomore Jenny Ryan (28) and freshman Maddy Budris (14) combined for 42 assists, and Gaglione pulled up a career-high 17 digs.
Oehler recorded 12 kills with only one error in 27 attempts in the Stevens match. The Mules' best chance to take a set was the second, when they came back from a four-point deficit to tie the score at 21-all. But the Ducks finished out the set by scoring four of the last five points.
