Loniewski Wins Title on OT Takedown
Sophomore Andrew Loniewski of the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team captured the 141-pound bracket in dramatic fashion at the Will Abele Invitational at Ursinus.
Loniewski was one of five placewinners for the Mules. Senior Brian McCaw came in second at 125, sophomore CJ Horvath was fifth at 133, freshman Noah Schlofer placed sixth at 197, and senior Andrew Franklin finished seventh at 285.
The top seed at 141, Loniewski was dominant in his first four bouts, reaching the final on two technical falls and two pins. In the championship bout, he faced an Ursinus opponent who is ranked seventh in the region. The two wrestlers traded escapes early in the second and third periods for the only points of regulation before Loniewski, ranked fourth in the region, scored a takedown 56 seconds into overtime. The sudden victory gave Loniewski his first career tournament title after three previous second-place finishes.
McCaw, seeded fourth, advanced to his third career tournament final with two pins, one against a seeded Division II opponent, and a decision. He dropped a close 6-4 decision to the sixth-ranked wrestler in the region.
Horvath also outperformed his seed, going 5-1 with three technical falls to place fifth as the eighth seed. He now has six techs on the season, just one short of the school record.
Schlofer, who was unseeded, went 3-2 and Franklin 4-2 to place at the two heaviest weight classes. Franklin finished seventh at the Will Abele Invitational for the second straight year.
