Baseball Completes Sweep on Late HR
The Muhlenberg baseball team completed a season sweep of Ursinus with a 3-2 win.
Freshman Marc Quarrie led off the top of the ninth with a no-doubt home run to center field for what proved to be the winning run. It was the second last-inning game-winning homer this season for Quarrie, who is the first Mule freshman since 1997 to hit four round-trippers in a season.
The game also featured the first career home run for junior Aidan Legner, who went deep in the top of the fifth to answer an Ursinus run in the fourth and tie the game at 1-1. The game remained knotted until the seventh, when Quarrie walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out, 0-2 live-drive single by freshman Spencer Hobson.
Freshman Luke Foley pitched a brilliant seven innings, allowing seven hits and just the one run while striking out four, including the last batter he faced with the tying run on third.
Freshman Charlie Siper came on in the eighth and allowed the tying run after giving up a leadoff triple but minimized the damage. He struck out a pinch-hitter with one out and the bases loaded and got out of the inning on a fly ball to right. Quarrie's home run made Siper the fifth Muhlenberg pitcher to earn his first career win this season.
After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, junior Ethan Brochin retired three of the next four hitters to nail down the win and his fifth save of the season - the most by a Mule since 2015.
